You can apply ointment but not theory…

Why oh why oh why! do people use the phrase, apply theory to practice”? You can apply ointment but not theory. Applying makes it sound like the practice is animate and that it is somehow separate from the practitioners who practice it.

In my view, (which internalises the locus of control), theory modifies what practitioners know which facilitates a change in decision making that ultimately changes how they practice.

So theory changes practitioners who in turn modify the decisions they make about their own practice.

Telling people that we will help them apply theory to practice kinda cuts them out of the loop and makes it more difficult for people to accept accountability for their own personal agency.
